Course Brief

Learn how to get the most out of your manual camera in this introduction to photography course. Over four sessions, Ray Gruchy will cover the fundamentals of manual photography including controls, common settings, exposure, shutter speed, aperture and focus. At the end of the course you will have a good understanding of how to get the most out of your photography and feel confident you can develop your own photographic style.

This course is designed for complete beginners or anyone who might have used a camera previously looking for a refresher to update their skills.

What you will learn

  • A brief discussion on the differences and similarities between a DSLR and a mirrorless camera

  • Description of the layout of the controls on a DSLR/Mirrorless camera including what they are used for

  • Difference between P, A, S and M settings on the camera and when and how to use them

  • Explanation of the different photo file formats RAW, TIFF, JPEG and DNG

  • What is ‘Exposure’ and what is a ‘Correct Exposure’ (including discussion on understanding an exposure Histogram and exposure compensation)

  • The Relationship between Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO and how and when to set these

  • The relationship between Aperture and Focus (Depth of Field)

  • Differences between Auto Focus and Manual Focus – How to set and use

  • Different types of Auto Focus and when to use them

  • Uses of Wide, Normal and Telephoto lenses- Zooms and Prime Lenses.

  • Other useful settings and techniques (including white balance)

  • Brief discussion on options for post processing photos

What you should bring

  • Camera, at least one lens, memory cards and charged batteries.

  • Your camera manual (either printed or you can usually find this online)

  • Pen and notebook

  • Optional - a card reader and laptop
