Course Brief

Learn the basics to machine sewing in this introductory sewing course. Each week make a different project, learning how to read patterns, finish seams and hems, different stitch types and adjusting tension. The class includes use of classroom sewing machines or you are welcome to bring your own.

Open to kids (8+ years) and teens. Suitable for complete beginners.

What you will learn

  • Sewing machine basic functions, including stitches, threading, using the bobbin, adjusting tension and fixing common problems

  • Straight stitching, curves, seams, hems

  • Understanding sewing patterns

What to bring

A materials list will be provided by the tutor before the first class.

Please bring the following optional sewing supplies if you have them:

  • Scissors

  • Tape Measure

  • Sharp Pins

Meet your tutor

Kylie Hawkins

Kylie has been sewing for as long as she can remember. Having been fortunate enough to inherit her mother’s fine sewing skills, she has been creating ever since. Studying fashion design straight out of school and more recently completing a costume design Diploma at Melbourne Polytechnic she continues to acquire knowledge to support her skills. Having applied her skills across multiple industries spanning Bridal, Formal Hire, Fabric retailers, Patchwork and Quilting and Embroidery; Kylie is well positioned with a wealth of experience and skills to pass on the gift of sewing to all students.
